AUTO CARRIERS & LOG TRUCK

Auto carriers have a rich history that dates back to the early20th century. The auto carriers were designed to transport vehicles by rail, and they quickly became an essential part of the automotive. Over time, auto carriers evolved to meet the changing needs of the industry and today they are used to transport vehicles by road, rail, and sea. Despite the many changes that have taken place over the, auto carriers remain an important part of the automotive supply chain

Log trucks have been an essential part of the forestry industry for many years. These trucks are specifically designed to transport logs from the forest to the sawmill or other processing facilities. The first log trucks were horse-drawn wag, but as technology advanced, trucks became the preferred method of transportation. Today, log trucks are equipped with powerful engines and specialized trailers to ensure that logs are transported safely and efficiently.

If youre ever going to relocate or need to move your vehicle across the country without driving it, you will need to find an auto transporter to assist you in your journey. In order to locate safe and reliable auto transport.

Guidelines on what to look in Auto Transport Company? At earlier periods shipment of vehicle from one place to another place was a hectic task. Shipment of cars or any other goods use to take 3 to 4 months of time to arrive at the distant place.

A logging truck or timber lorry is a large truck used to carry logs. Some have integrated flatbeds, some are discrete tractor units, and some are configured to spread a load between the tractor unit and a dollied trailer pulled behind it. Often more than one trailer is attached.

The most convenient trees to cut down were those near waterways for easy transportation. As the supply dwindled and loggers had to go farther from water, they used teams of oxen or horses for hauling. These were superseded by steam-powered donkeys and locomotives. The final development was the logging truck.

A truck was used for logging in Covington, Washington, in 1913. The coming of World War I and the resulting demand for the Pacific Northwest's Sitka spruce for airplanes "established log trucking in Washington". The United States Army assigned thousands of men to the Spruce Production Division to build roads into western Washington to harvest the dispersed stands of the best trees. After the war ended, a plenitude of surplus military trucks made their adoption attractive to logging companies, particularly smaller outfits that could not afford expensive locomotives.

The primitive trucks were improved in the 1920s and 1930s, with more powerful engines and better braking systems. The old "narrow, solid rubber—sometimes steel—treadless tires" were replaced by wider pneumatic ones with treads. Plank roads gave way to graded dirt ones. By the mid-1930s, trucks were hauling as much timber out of the Pacific Northwest as the railroads.

World War II saw improved truck designs, and once again these were passed along to logging companies through the sale of surplus military vehicles after the war was over.

There are two main types of modern logging trucks—those used on rough ground and trails in the forest where they are felled and those used for transport on normal highways and roads.Because the roads in forests are rough and often temporary, the suspension and tires of an offroad truck are especially significant. Solid, low pressure and high pressure tires have been used. As many as nine axles may be used to provide low ground pressure and good traction.

Timber is commonly grown in hilly country unsuitable for farming and so the ability of a log truck to climb a gradient is significant. The steepness depends on the quality of the surface - mud and snow are harder to climb than gravel and soil. For a manageable gradient, the speed will then depend upon the power of the truck. The legal weight limits will vary by jurisdiction but, for example, in the southern states of the US, they range from 80,000 to 88,000 pounds (36,300 to 39,900 kg)—about 40 short tons (35.7 long tons; 36.3 t).

To load the logs, the truck may be fitted with one or more winches or cranes. The logs are commonly unloaded by letting them roll off sideways

Alert: loading and unloading trucks

Hazard summary

While a logging truck driver was removing tie-down cables from his load, a big log that had been loaded above the tops of the stakes fell and killed him. Either the log was unstable and ready to fall as soon as a tie-down was removed or it was dislodged from a stable position by the movement of a cable.

The quotes which you receive from auto transport companies are mostly based on the stand passenger vehicles.

2.    Once you find the quotes of various companies don’t immediately get attracted with lowest priced auto transport companies. Those organizations which keep their charges low are mainly to lure the unwary customers. Such companies will not have their own carrier to ship the vehicles. They solely depend on the carrier of the other people and if they don’t agree to lend out for lower charges then your car will not be moved.

Auto shipping companies will see to that your car is properly loaded and unloaded and delivered to you as soon it is possible or at assumed date at the said spot or at your door steps.

The fifth wheel coupling provides the link between a semi-trailer and the towing truck, tractor unit, leading trailer or dolly. Some recreational vehicles use a fifth wheel configuration, requiring the coupling to be installed in the bed of a pickup truck as a towing vehicle.

The coupling consists of a coupling pin (or king pin) on the front of the semi-trailer, and a horseshoe-shaped coupling device called a fifth wheel on the rear of the towing vehicle. The configuration is sometimes called a turn-table in Australia and New Zealand, especially if it's a rotating ball-race-bearing type.

The term 'fifth wheel' comes from a similar coupling used on four-wheel horse-drawn carriages and wagons. The device allowed the front axle assembly to pivot in the horizontal plane, to facilitate turning.

There are two types of couplings: fifth wheel coupling and automatic. In some applications, no separable coupling is fitted, and the trailer is bolted to the tractor unit, using a bearing and rocker feet as are used under a fifth wheel skid plate.

Fifth wheel coupling

The towing vehicle has a wide coupling plate known as a bolted onto its chassis on which the semi-trailer rests and pivots. As the tractor reverses under the trailer, a king-pin under the front of the trailer slides into a slot in the skidplate, and the jaws of the fifth wheel close on to it. The driver has to raise the trailer legs manually, and couple the airbrake lines and electrical cables. Automatic couplings .Many years ago, automatic couplings predominated but are now quite rare. Automatic couplings were generally used for payloads of 12 tons or less, e.g. on the Scammell Mechanical Horse.

There is no coupling plate on the tractor. There is a turntable permanently fixed to the underside of the trailer. This locks to the chassis of the tractor. When the tractor reverses under the trailer, its legs rise and the brake and electrical connections are made automatically. Almost the entire coupling and uncoupling procedure is operated by the driver from inside the cab, except that he or she has to descend to release (or apply) the trailer parking brake.

Suggested precautions

The Regulations for Industrial Establishments (R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 851, s. 45(b)(ii)) state that "material, articles or things shall be transported, placed or stored so that [they] can be removed or withdrawn without endangering the safety of any worker."

The Regulations also state (R.R.O. 1990, Reg. 851, s. 116) that:

"A vehicle used for hauling logs shall,
(b) be so loaded that no log extends,

  1. outside the stakes, or

  2. farther than one-half its diameter above the stakes."

No log in a load should be more than one-half its diameter above the stakes at any point between the tops of the stakes.

Workers loading and unloading logs and other materials should be instructed in safe procedures appropriate to the material they handle. These procedures should be designed to ensure that whenever there is a possibility that part of a load will fall no worker will be in its path.

Logging road

Logging road near Eséka in Cameroon

Logging roads are constructed to provide access to the forest for logging and other forest management operations. They are commonly narrow, winding, and unpaved, but main haul roads can be widened, straightened or paved if traffic volume warrants it.

The choice of road design standards is a tradeoff between construction costs and haul costs (which the road is designed to reduce). A road that serves only a few stands will be used by relatively few trucks over its lifetime and so it makes sense to save construction costs with a narrow, winding, unpaved road that adds to the time (and haul costs) of the few trips. A main haul road serving a large area, however, will be used by many trucks each day, and each trip will be shorter (saving time and money) if the road is straighter and wider, with a smoother surface.

Logging trucks are generally given right of way. In areas that the practice is regulated, on non-highway roads with heavy logging traffic may be "radio-controlled", meaning that a CB radio on board any vehicle on the road is advised for safety reasons.

Logging is the process of cutting, processing, and moving trees to a location for transport. It may include skidding, on-site processing, and loading of trees or logs onto trucks or skeleton cars. In forestry, the term logging is sometimes used narrowly to describe the logistics of moving wood from the stump to somewhere outside the forest, usually a sawmill or a lumber yard. In common usage, however, the term may cover a range of forestry or silviculture activities.

Logging is the beginning of a supply chain that provides raw material for many products societies worldwide use for housing, construction, energy, and consumer paper products. Logging systems are also used to manage forests, reduce the risk of wildfires, and restore ecosystem functions, though their efficiency for these purposes has been challenged.

Logging frequently has negative impacts. The harvesting procedure itself may be illegal, including the use of corrupt means to gain access to forests; extraction without permission or from a protected area; the cutting of protected species; or the extraction of timber in excess of agreed limits. It may involve the so-called "timber mafia". Excess logging can lead to irreparable harm to ecosystems, such as deforestation and biodiversity loss. Infrastructure for logging can also lead to other environmental degradation. These negative environmental impacts can lead to environmental conflict. Additionally, there is significant occupational injury risk involved in logging.

Logging can take many formats. Clearcutting (or "block cutting") is not necessarily considered a type of logging but a harvesting or silviculture method. Cutting trees with the highest value and leaving those with lower value, often diseased or malformed trees, is referred to as high grading. It is sometimes called selective logging, and confused with selection cutting, the practice of managing stands by harvesting a proportion of trees. Logging usually refers to above-ground forestry logging. Submerged forests exist on land that has been flooded by damming to create reservoirs. Harvesting trees from forests submerged by flooding or dam creation is called underwater logging, a form of timber recovery.
