ROLAND KAISER
Roland Kaiser was born on May 10, 1952, under the real name Ronald Keiler. He is a German pop singer and one of the most successful artists in Germany in this genre. After graduating from high school in the 1960s, Kaiser initially completed a commercial apprenticeship and subsequently worked as head of the advertising department at a car dealership. Even at this time, he was already working part-time as a singer. He was discovered by producer Gerd Kämpfe, who later produced the singer's songs together with Peter Wagner. The German pop singer's first single, "Was ist wohl aus ihr geworden?" (What has she become?), was released in 1974. His first chart success came in 1976 with "Frei, das heißt allein" (Free, that means alone) – a German version of "Verde" – which reached number 14. The following year, "Sieben Fässer Wein" (Seven Barrels of Wine), one of Kaiser's most successful songs, was released. With this song, which reached number seven in the charts, the musician achieved his breakthrough in Germany. Kaiser subsequently participated in the Eurovision Song Contest, but only placed eighth in 1980. His most successful song to date is "Santa Maria." It was released that same year. It is a German version of the Italian original by Oliver Onions. The song stayed at number one in the German singles charts for more than five weeks. "Santa Maria" was also a huge success in the Netherlands and Belgium. The following singles, "To Love You," "Love Me One Last Time," and "Sometimes I Want to Be with You," were also huge successes, landing in the top 10. The artist was a welcome guest on radio and television shows. Kaiser was unable to continue his success with his subsequent albums in the early 1990s, which were more in the pop than Schlager genre. Nevertheless, he is still one of the most successful German-speaking pop artists, and is particularly in demand for his live performances.
